How To Create An Ellipse Glow Logo - Watermark in Photoshop CS5

Hello,

For this post I wanted to create another simple but very visually appealing logo.

Some of the different tools used in this Photoshop tutorial are Elliptical tool, inner and outer glow, clouds (render), gradients. Remember to label your layers!

First step - Start out with a new canvas - size 1920 height 1080

Change the background to any color using Paint Bucket Tool (I used black)
Label this layer BG for background
Create another layer called Ellipse 1
First step is to create an ellipse using the Ellipse Tool (Shape tool > Ellipse Tool)
Hold shift then click from top left to bottom right

Move ellipse to center of the canvas
This first ellipse will fit just inside the edges of the canvas
Right click the layer and select Blending Options > Inner Glow
Check Inner Glow and select your desired glow color
Make sure the Inner Glow settings are as follows:

  • Blend Mode - Screen
  • Opacity - 75%
  • Technique - Softer
  • Size - Around 70 pixels

Next make sure Outer Glow is checked then select Outer Glow
Match the glow color to the Inner Glow
Make sure the Outer Glow settings are as follows:
  • Blend Mode - Screen
  • Opacity - 50%
  • Technique - Softer
  • Size - Around 100 pixels (make sure it does not go outside the canvas)

After clicking OK right click the layer and select Duplicate Layer
Name this layer Ellipse 2
Select the Ellipse 2 layer and press Ctrl-T
Next hold shift click a corner and resize the second ellipse so it is just smaller than the first
Move this ellipse so it is in the middle of the first ellipse
.

Right click the layer and select Blending Options > Outer Glow
Make sure the Outer Glow settings are as follows:
  • Opacity - 100%
  • Size - 100 pixels
  • Source - Center

Now select Inner Glow and click on the Gradient tool (faded color bar)
Change the lower left color stop (looks like a little pencil) to a dark grey
Next change the lower right color stop to a darker grey then click OK and exit Blending Options

Now we are going to insert our text for the logo
Select the text tool and draw a box the size of the image
Chose your favorite font and type your text
Now we want to copy the Layer Style by right clicking the Ellipse 1 layer and select Copy Layer Style
Then paste the layer style onto our text layer
Next we want to change the Blending Options on our text
Uncheck the Inner Glow option and select Outer Glow
Make sure the Outer Glow settings are as follows (then click OK):
  • Opacity - 100%
  • Size - 20 pixels

Next we want to add a lens flare or gloss to the image (this step is optional)
Create a new layer and label it gloss
Select the Elliptical Marquee tool
Change the feather to zero and make a small ellipse to fit in top left or right above the text
Select the Gradient tool and change gradient style to the first style and color is black to white
Click and drag cursor inside the ellipse to apply gradient
Change the layer style to Screen

Lower the layer Opacity to about 70%
Press Ctrl-t to rotate and size ellipse to top corner of text

Hide all layers except for the BG layer
Create a new layer called Cloud Color
Select color for the clouds (will be the same color as the glow)
Select the Brush Tool and choose feathered edge brush tool
Change brush size to around 960 pixels
Click around the layer about 5 times leaving some black showing through

Next create a new layer called Clouds
Change the foreground and background back to the default white and black
Now click Filter > Render > Clouds

Change layer style to Divide
Now adjust the Cloud Color layer opacity to desired level (around 25% for my colors)

Next step is to make all the layers visible
Move the Clouds layer to the very top and adjust the opacity to desired level (around 25% for my colors)

Your logo is now complete! Feel free to mess around with any of these settings to see the different effects!

I hope you learned something from this tutorial. Remember to play around with different settings and tools for different results! Have fun with it! Keep checking back for more tutorials!

Thanks, Jordan
